My Notes: The Keep It Simple 12 Inch Square is certainly very simple at first glance. But there are a few little “twists” in there! This square is perfect for our newest crocheters, and an enjoyable evening project for those with more experience. With 2 colors, as written, you can even carry the yarn along the back for minimal ends to weave in!
I did make some changes to Rnd 12 for my square, though. The post stitches in Rounds 6 and 7 were causing a lot of warping in my square, making it look more like an X. I could’ve redone those stitches, pulling the loops up higher on each, to create taller stitches. However, I decided to adjust the final round a bit instead, and leave more visual “movement” within the square. I used sc stitches in the corners, with hdc stitches in the center of each side. I also skipped a few stitches on each side, and I was able to get a nice square block!

Sizing: I ended up making some changes to Rnd 12, as described above – that got me to 12″. But everyone’s gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.
What I Did:
I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):
Rnds 1 – 2: Black
Rnd 3: Cornsilk
Rnd 4: Boysenberry
Rnd 5: Mallard
Rnd 6: Merlot
Rnd 7: Black
Rnd 8: Cornsilk
Rnd 9: Boysenberry
Rnd 10: Mallard
Rnd 11: Merlot
Rnd 12: Black
This square required a moderate blocking, so I used the wet blocking method
