ALL ABOUT THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

Granny square projects make geometry fun – and there are so amazing projects you can make with granny squares! This one is one is a unique way to construct a garment, and something I’ve been eager to try for a while.

Market Day Cardigan Part 1 - free crochet along on Moogly

The Market Day Cardigan is made to be big and cozy – easy to throw on when there is a chill in the air. So with that in mind (and a 6″ square to base everything around), there are 3 sizes to fit most – feel free to go down a size if you like a closer fit.

Here in Part 3 is where the magic of this design happens – it transforms from “squares” to a wearable piece! The Market Day Cardigan is great for every skill level. In the first two parts we learned how to crochet a granny square and how to sew the mattress stitch, and now we’ll learn how to crochet in the front and back loop only,  and how to make one of my favorite styles of crochet ribbing!

THE YARN FOR THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

To make this crochet sleevelss cardigan I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! This yarn takes a bit of practice, but I walk you through the tricks I use to get squares I love –  CLICK HERE to see how to make great granny squares using this yarn. We’ll use it for the rest of the sweater too – no need to plan the color placement after the squares are made.

I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but I’ve been loving seeing everyone’s colors as we work through this pattern! If this yarn isn’t the look you’re going for, you can use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6″ granny squares.

This pattern is being presented as a crochet along. Below you will find Part 3 of the pattern. CLICK HERE for Part 1. CLICK HERE for Part 2.

For a longer-length sweater: Add squares to the top two rows along the sides, and to the bottom of the bottom row of squares. Be sure to add as many columns of squares to the top sides as you add rows of squares to the bottom. Remember that each column/row adds 6 inches of length. The collar instructions do not need to be changed, but you may wish to add seaming along the sides – be sure to leave the top 2 sets of squares at the top unsewn for an armhole.
