Hello, my lil’ sugarplum! This week, I have an updated version of a lovely, older crochet cardigan pattern that I know you’re going to love making! Keep reading to learn all about the fun, reversible Apple Orchard pattern.
Apple Orchard was originally designed by Kristina Smiley and has been updated by Janica York Carter and the Expression Fiber Arts Design Team. When asked about her pattern, Kristina said, “A cozy cardigan with a row of geometric cables along each side. This cardigan is a reversible design. It’s true! Turn it inside out, and you’ll have a slightly different look. I designed this cardigan to be comfortable enough to wear with your favorite pair of jeans while exploring your favorite apple orchard or pumpkin patch.”
“Once you block your cardigan and pin the cables open, the cable pattern on each side of the front panels resembles leaves from the trees. The back side of these cables contains rows of puff or popcorn stitch, making the cardigan reversible. I’m a huge fan of textured stitches and incorporated them into the main design feature and also into the border. This pattern is totally customizable. More rows may be added to the body and to each sleeve for a fuller or longer version. ”
This Intermediate to Advanced level pattern is for the adventurous crocheter who loves to tackle an embellished garment. Techniques include Front and Back Post stitches, puff stitches, and combining them to make cables.
The updated version of the Apple Orchard cardigan was crocheted with our yummy, wonderfully versatile Dewy DK yarn. This yarn is perfect for items you want to cherish for years to come! It’s a beautiful yarn that’s luscious and supremely soft with a gorgeous drape, amazing structure, and a subtle gleam. This yarn is a blend of 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon, and 10% Silk with 250 yds/228 m per skein.
The pattern is offered in sizes XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL), and you’ll need 5 (6, 6, 7, 8) (9, 10, 11, 12) skeins of Dewy DK, depending on your selected size [1250 (1500, 1500, 1750, 2000) (2250, 2500, 2750, 3000) total yards / 1150 (1380, 1380, 1610, 1840) (2070, 2300, 2530, 2760) total meters].
The long-sleeve sample shown here was crocheted with Mermaid Harbor Dewy DK, and the short-sleeve sample was made with Scarlet Dewy DK. Both versions are a size Small, modeled on a 34” (86 cm bust).
