Crochet Southwest Spirit Review

A Bit About the Author

Susan Kennedy

“Susan Kennedy lives in the mountains of southwest Colorado with her husband and three sons. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Michigan before she learned to crochet. She hooked her first projects in 2012 while traveling the US in a vintage Volkswagen camper van. When she’s not teaching science to university students or crocheting on her front porch, you can find her hiking, camping, snowboarding, or paddleboarding with her family.

Pretty Peaceful Crochet was born in 2013 as a fundraising effort for the Kentucky Birth Coalition. Susan opened the Pretty Peaceful Etsy shop to help pass legislation to grant licenses to certified professional midwives. In 2019, the Coalition achieved their goal and licensed certified professional midwives now bring maternity care to the families of Kentucky. The Pretty Peaceful Etsy shop continues to fundraise with the goal of bringing midwife-led licensed freestanding birth centers to Kentucky.

Pretty Peaceful patterns and tutorials have been published in many popular crochet magazines as well as on Ravelry, LoveCrafts, Etsy, and YouTube. Learn more at www.prettypeaceful.com.”

Inspired by the Four Corners

Located where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona meet, Susan found inspiration in the landscape and her experience in nature. And the inspiration is easy to see! Instead of jumping straight into the patterns, there is first a section on “Southwest Textile Traditions.” From traditional techniques to current day fiber festivals, you’ll want to stop and enjoy this lovely story.

The patterns in Crochet Southwest Spirit are then presented in three sections: Simple Stitches, Textured Stitches, and Southwestern Tapestry. All of which feature unique patterns full of color! And each includes an inspirational story too.

Let’s Dive In

First up, here are some of the Simple Stitches projects. Here you’ll find towels, baskets, a wrap, a blanket, and a cushion. I love the twisty cleverness of the Sedona Knot Cushion, but the blanket (seen on the cover) is certainly the most challenging. Fortunately, Susan has included step-by-step photos and charts to go with the written pattern!

In the Textured Stitches section, there are a variety of pillows, blankets, a wrap, and a rug. There are a few charts to be found here as well, and the techniques include bobbles, filet crochet, mosaic crochet, and fringe! I’m not usually a big fringe person, but I’m in love with the Bears Ears Fringed Pillow!

The final pattern section is Southwestern Tapestry, and here it’s all about the colorwork! There is a wall hanging, blankets, pillows, and a tote. Once again, charts are a big help. Southwestern motifs are a running theme throughout. But the Canyon Moon Blanket is the one I find most pleasing with its rainbow of circles!

Wrapping things up there’s a Techniques section full of stitch definitions, border, tassel, and fringe tutorials. And there’s a wonderful section on tapestry crochet!
