Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns is one of Salena‘s newest books with Stackpole, and it debuted in June of this year. I’ve had the opportunity to chat with Salena several times over the years, and she is always a delight.
“I learned to crochet at the age of 5 and haven’t put my hook down since! I’ve published over 300 patterns, authored 7 (note from Tamara – it’s a lot more than that now!) crochet books, taught 2 courses with Craftsy, and launched the American Crochet Association. kicks off with 12 pages of instructions on the crochet basics. This section covers slipknots, how to hold your yarn and hook, and how to chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. There are lots of photos, and each step is shown! There are even instructions on finishing off your project!
The 6 designs in Within a section on “How to Understand and Follow Patterns,” you’ll find a bobble stitch discloth. Then we learn about diagrams, yarn ends, changing colors, and gauge. Just in time to try out working 2 more washcloth patterns and a head wrap!
There is a section on how to crochet in tubes, which includes (very aptly) an infinity scarf pattern!
The final section covers increasing rounds – and a Chunky Motif Blanket pattern! This book is just a great mix of instruction and patterns, and it’s all presented in a great, step by step format.
The yarn used in these designs ranges from DK/3 to Super Bulky/6. All are easy to find, in person or online, and alternative suggestions are included! Knit Picks CotLin DK, Lion Brand Wool Ease, Lion Brand Mandala Watercolors, and Bernat Softee Chunky are all featured.
This book is ideal for those wanting to learn to crochet, or who has just started their journey with videos. It fills in a lot of the gaps and answers the questions we all had!
