A Bit About the Author

Salena Baca, author of Crochet Granny Square Tops, Bags, and More: Review and Giveaway

Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns is one of Salena‘s newest books with Stackpole, and it debuted in June of this year. I’ve had the opportunity to chat with Salena several times over the years, and she is always a delight.

“I learned to crochet at the age of 5 and haven’t put my hook down since! I’ve published over 300 patterns, authored 7 (note from Tamara – it’s a lot more than that now!) crochet books, taught 2 courses with Craftsy, and launched the American Crochet Association. I currently live in Oregon with my husband, son, 2 cats and 1 dog.”

Now let’s dive into Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns!

Inside Crochet Now

Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns is a lightweight soft cover book with 32 pages. The perfect size for throwing in your project bag!

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to crochet but weren’t sure where to start, Crochet Now is here to help! Packed with clear, step-by-step instructions, this covers everything needed to start crocheting beautiful projects with confidence.

Salena Baca, a crochet instructor with years of experience teaching beginners, makes learning crochet simple and fun. She breaks down essential stitches, techniques, and terminology into easy-to-follow steps, with detailed explanations and helpful photos to guide the way.

Crochet Now starts with the essentials, teaching how to hold a hook, manage yarn, and create those first stitches. It covers essentials like understanding crochet terminology, reading patterns, and even stitch diagrams. With straightforward tutorials, practice comes easily as you learn to crochet in rows, tubes, and increasing rounds. Plus, you’ll work through 6 beginner-friendly patterns designed to help build knowledge and skill along the way.

By the time you finish Crochet Now, you’ll have a solid crochet foundation and the confidence to make even more creative projects. So grab some yarn and pick up a hook—it’s time to Crochet Now!”

Crochet Now by Salena Baca

Crochet Now kicks off with 12 pages of instructions on the crochet basics. This section covers slipknots, how to hold your yarn and hook, and how to chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. There are lots of photos, and each step is shown! There are even instructions on finishing off your project!

The 6 designs in Crochet Now are interspersed throughout the book, along with more crochet basics instructions! Within a section on “How to Understand and Follow Patterns,” you’ll find a bobble stitch discloth. Then we learn about diagrams, yarn ends, changing colors, and gauge. Just in time to try out working 2 more washcloth patterns and a head wrap!
