Building a Box with Felting – and Patons Classic Wool Roving!

The choice of yarn can make all the difference in your crochet project. Patons Classic Wool Roving yarn not only provides a soft and cozy feel but also felts beautifully! This creates a more solid, heartier fabric that’s perfect for containers, boxes, and bags. Felting is a seemingly magical process that transforms your wool yarn crochet projects into durable and beautifully textured masterpieces. It can be done by machine or by hand, whichever you prefer!

While you don’t have to felt this box to use or gift it, it does give it a more “solid fabric” look and feel. If you’d prefer a different yarn but still want to felt it, be sure to choose a wool that is NOT superwash. If you’d prefer not to felt it, you can use whatever yarn you like – Bernat Blanket would be a fun way to make a great big Conversation Heart Crochet Box!

NOTES:

This pattern is felted. Felting is an imprecise process, with a unique result every time. Felting is optional, but if you do want to felt this project, be sure to do so before embroidering it. Of course, embroidering it is also optional!

This pattern begins with a magic circle, but is worked in rows. If you would prefer to avoid the magic circle, chain 2 and work the first row into the second ch from the hook.

Assembly: Felting and Embroidery

Add the Embroidery

There are dozens of Conversation Hearts sayings to choose from – and of course, you can always make your own custom one!

To add the embroidery, cut a 2-3 foot length of floss, thread it on a yarn needle, and sew on the block letters to the Top of the Box as desired. Be sure plan out your spacing before you begin. To make letters as shown, I used the backstitch technique (linked in tutorials above).
