Hello, sweet pea! I’m thrilled to announce that our Summer 2025 Choose Your Own Adventure Knit Along is starting soon! We’ll join together on Ravelry to knit the Ergodic cowl and shawl pattern, which you’ll customize based on the unique options you choose along the way. Of course, there will be prizes at the end of the 10-week Knit Along, so I hope you’ll keep reading to learn how you can sign up and join in on all of the fun!
Ergodic was designed by Janica York Carter. When asked about her pattern, Janica said, “Choose your own adventure! I loved seeing those words on a book cover when I was a kid. These clever stories were written so that at the end of each chapter, the reader could choose an option about how the story should progress. Your choice determined what chapter you read next. The mix-and-match possibilities meant one book could tell a story many ways.”
“Chandi challenged me to interpret that very phrase, “choose your own adventure,” into a knit or crochet pattern. That was the first choice: knit or crochet? And I chose both so that everyone could join in the fun! (If you’d like to choose an adventure in crochet, check out the Appetency pattern.)”
“I’ve provided fourteen stitch patterns that each represent a possible aspect of an adventure. As you answer the following questions, your choices will take you on your journey to create a design that is uniquely yours. Let’s get started!”
This is a Beginner to Intermediate level pattern and is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. The level of difficulty will be based on the stitch patterns selected.
Whether you choose to knit Ergodic as a cowl or wrap, you’ll need five colors of our fabulous Twisted Tweed Sport yarn, which is a wonderfully soft and bouncy, 2-ply, sport weight yarn. This unique fiber blend includes two types of wool that are twisted together. Because they take the dye differently, the result is a cool, barber pole effect, and gold, plum and brown Donegal Tweed neps are flecked throughout. This base has such an earthy, homey, charming feel. It can be dressed down and worn in the most casual of cozy settings or dressed up for elegant occasions. It has an heirloom, heritage, yet hip, modern vibe to it. It is a blend of 43% Superwash Merino Wool, 42% Fine Merino Wool, and 15% Donegal. With 384 yds/351 m per skein, there’s no limit to where your creativity can take you!
We used the Messy Palette Hues Twisted Tweed Sport Kit to knit the wrap shown here. Our sample used approximately 1263 m / 1382 yds in total: Color A: 257 m / 281 yds, Color B: 253 m / 277 yds, Color C: 257 m / 281 yds, Color D: 240 m / 262 yds, Color E: 257 m / 281 yds. Your yarn amounts may vary depending upon how many colors you use and which pattern options you select.
We used the Lake Freedom Hues Twisted Tweed Sport Kit to knit the cowl shown here. Our sample cowl used approximately 612 m / 669 yds in total: Color A: 145 m / 158 yds, Color B: 120 m / 131 yds, Color C: 126 m / 138 yds, Color D: 116 m / 127 yds, Color E: 105 m / 115 yds. Your yarn amounts may vary depending upon how many colors you use and which pattern options you select.
