Birch Bark Candle Cozy Crochet Pattern on Moogly

There’s just something so cozy about candlelight – and when you dress it up with a handmade touch, it gets even better! The Birch Bark Candle Cozy is a quick, easy project that turns an ordinary candle – real or fake – into a rustic, farmhouse-style accent piece. With just two shades of medium-weight yarn, you can crochet this faux-birch design that looks great in any season. Whether you’re setting the mood for a fall gathering, adding a natural element to your holiday dĂ©cor, or just giving your everyday space a little handmade charm, this project is as fun to make as it is to use. Plus, it’s a fantastic little stash buster!

Made in Worsted Weight Yarn

For this project, I used Lily Sugar’n Cream – a classic 100% cotton yarn that’s easy to find and perfect for home dĂ©cor. It comes in a huge variety of colors and styles, but I went with Soft Ecru and Jute to really capture that natural birch bark look. The sturdy cotton gives this cozy just the right amount of structure, while still being soft and flexible enough to slip over your candle. And since it’s such a popular yarn, chances are you’ve already got a skein or two waiting in your stash!

Of course, you can use whatever yarn you like – especially if you are covering a battery-operated candle! But if you are putting this on something with an open flame, I do recommend using something less flammable or meltable – I’d stick with cotton or wool and avoid anything acrylic or polyester. Use your smarts when fire is involved!

Make It a Set!

I originally designed the Birch Bark Candle Cozy for the Stashbusting Quickies collection from 2021. And now I’m sharing it here – free on the blog, but also still available as a paid PDF on Ravelry and Etsy (see the banners above). But it was inspired by a previous project – the Birch Bark Basket!

So now, you can make it a set – or just make the part you like – and in any color! I can’t wait to see what you all make with these simple patterns!

HOW TO CREATE THE BIRCH BARK CROCHET STITCH PATTERN

Beginning in Round 7, each stitch is worked over a strand of color B, enclosing the strand inside the stitch. The length of each stripe and its placement is random and at will. Birchbark trees have random (to our eyes) stripes, and like a tree, your cozy should be your own unique work of art! To add a stripe of color B to the pattern, pull the strand to the front of your work and let it hang.

Continue making sc stitches as before, with color B hanging loose in front of your work. This could be for just one stitch, or several – it’s up to you! Then when the stripe is done, pull Color B back behind the next stitch and continue as before, enclosing it inside each stitch. Be sure to give a tug to color B once in a while to make sure it doesn’t sag – but don’t pull so tight that the main color fabric buckles either.
