Introduction to Crochet Sweaters
Making a crochet sweater might seem like an unreachable goal when you are new to crochet, but with this collection of tips and free women’s crochet sweater patterns, you will be able to make a sweater you love!
In this list, we have curated stunning crochet sweaters for beginners to experienced crochet enthusiasts alike. From cozy hoods to warm turtlenecks and plain stripes to fun colorways, you’ll surely find a sweater pattern that can fit your style.
Why Crochet Sweaters?
Most people see knitted sweaters in stores, so you might be wondering why you should make a sweater with crochet. The main answer is because it’s warmer! Because crochet stitches tend to be chunkier and use more yarn than knit stitches, a crocheted sweater will probably be warmer than a knit sweater.
Of course, there are summer crochet sweater options, too, but these are made with lighter weight yarn and more open stitches so they will be cooler.
If you like to crochet, making and wearing a crocheted sweater shows the world your skill. You can also make a sweater that’s just how you like it, from colors to stitches to fit.
Is It Hard to Crochet a Sweater? Can I Crochet a Sweater as a Beginner?
Sweaters aren’t the first project most beginner crocheters make, but sweaters aren’t necessarily as complex as you might think. There are a lot of easy crochet sweater patterns available, as well as projects for any skill level.
Many easy crochet sweater patterns are made of four rectangles: one each for the front and back and two sleeves. While they can get more complex in terms of shaping and construction, there are still a lot of options for new stitchers. You can also make sweaters from granny squares, just taking it one little piece at a time!
Supplies Needed to Make Crochet Sweaters
Yarn
Sweaters can be made from any yarn weight, from super fine to super bulky. Most crochet patterns will list the yarn used in the pattern. If you can’t find that particular yarn or want to use something you already have, make sure you match the suggested weight.
If you’re shopping for yarn in a particular weight, here are some of our favorites for crochet sweaters.
(1) Fingering Weight
(2) Sport Weight
(3) DK Weight
(4) Medium Weight
(5) Bulky Weight
(6) Super Bulky Weight
Don’t forget to check your gauge when you choose your yarn, because if you are getting a different gauge from what the designer got your sweater will turn out a different size!
Crochet Hook
The crochet hook size you’ll need will usually be indicated in the pattern, but since sweaters can be made from any yarn weight, they can also be made using different hooks. So, having all the sizes available will be best for you.
One of our favorites is the Clover Amour set for the variety of sizes available and the soft grip that is perfect for comfort on longer projects.
If you don’t know what size of hook you need you can also check the yarn label.
Yarn Needle
Yarn needles are so helpful to have on hand for weaving in ends and seaming the pieces of a sweater together.
Scissors
Having scissors that live with your crochet supplies is helpful because you will always know where they are. Small scissors are great for snipping yarn ends.
Tape Measure
Making crochet wearables means doing a lot of measuring. You need it to measure your size to determine if the pattern is a fit for you, and to measure your gauge if your tension and yarn are correct. Again having a dedicated tape measure that stays with your crochet stuff is super helpful.
Stitch Markers and Row Counters
Working on big projects it’s bound to happen that you will lose track of your rows and stitches, so having stitch markers and row counters are a big help for keeping track of where you are.
Stitch markers are great to mark the beginning or end of rows or rounds, and a row counter can help you keep track if you need to do increases or decreases every certain number of rows.
Crochet Stitches You Need to Know for Crochet Sweaters
Crochet sweaters, like many other projects, generally require the knowledge of the six basic crochet stitches: The chain stitch (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), treble crochet (tr), and slip stitch (ss) are commonly used in many patterns.
These basic stitches may be used on their own or in variations that require you to know the basics. An example is moss stitch, which uses single crochet and chain stitches.
But if you want to level up a crochet sweater pattern with a more beautiful stitch check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library and have the creative freedom to mix and match with 45 stitches, all built on these basics.
