36 Easy Crochet Infinity Scarf Patterns To Keep You Cozy – Cream Of The Crop Crochet

Crochet Infinity Scarves

What Are Infinity Scarves?

Infinity scarves are a type of scarf that’s connected into a loop instead of having the long ends hang down. Scarves are some of the first things beginner crocheters work on because of the simplicity of working in rows. The looped style also adds an extra layer of dimension and texture to any outfit!

A handmade crochet infinity scarf makes a great gift for friends and family, especially during the fall and winter. They’re not only stylish and cozy, they’re also practical in keeping your loved ones warm!

Once you start crocheting your first infinity scarf, they’re going to be some of your favorite types of scarves to wear! Try your hand at an infinity scarf with this collection of more than 30 free crochet scarf patterns!

How Do You Crochet an Infinity Scarf?

An infinity scarf can be worked in several different ways. The first would be to work lengthwise by crocheting a foundation chain at the length you want the scarf to be and working in rows until you reach your desired width.

You could also crochet shorter rows the size of your desired width and keep crocheting until it’s long enough to wrap twice around your neck (or however long you would like your scarf to be). Either way, the two ends will be sewn together to form a loop when the crocheting is done.

Another option is working your infinity scarf in the round. You would chain long enough for the desired length, join in the round and then work in a continuous loop or joined rounds as the pattern suggests until it is the width you want. Then when you’re done crocheting you just have to weave in ends.

The Best Stitches to Use for Infinity Scarves

Scarves can be crocheted with almost any crochet stitch. For a beginner, the basic stitches would be idea, including single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet

Most of the patterns you’ll find in this roundup are a variation of those three stitches along with slip stitches and chains.

How to Size a Crochet Scarf

Infinity scarves, and crochet scarves in general, come in various sizes. The rule of thumb for  a regular scarf is to make it as long as the person is tall. However, an infinity scarf is made to be looped around the neck a couple of times, which may make your needed length a lot bigger.

Krista Cagle of Easy Crochet has a detailed chart and scarf size calculator that’ll help you figure out the approximate size your scarf should be.

The standard length for an infinity scarf is as follows:

  • Short: 40-45 inches
  • Standard: 50-60 inches
  • Long: 65-70 inches
  • Extra long: 75-80 inches

Coming from the other direction, the standard width would be:

  • Narrow: 5-6 inches
  • Standard: 7-8 inches
  • Wide: 10-12 inches
  • Mega/Blanket: 15-30 inches

Joining Methods for Infinity Scarves

There are a number of ways to join the two ends of your scarves together, including:

This video tutorial from Fiber Flux shows how you can do all three so you can find the one you prefer for your projects.

Materials You’ll Need to Crochet an Infinity Scarf

Yarn

Infinity scarves can be made with anything from fingering weight yarn (for a lacy and lightweight scarf) to super bulky yarn (for an extra toasty and fluffy scarf).

If you are working from a pattern it will tell you the yarn weight, and often the exact type of yarn that was used. While you don’t have to use the exact same yarn in your project, it’s a great idea to stick in the same weight class, otherwise your project may be significantly larger or smaller than you expect.

Crochet Hook

Choosing the right crochet hook is dependent on the yarn you’ve picked and what the pattern calls for. With the wide variation of yarn weights you can make a scarf with, you also need a wide variation of crochet hooks to match them.

Owning a full set of crochet hooks is a wise investment if you plan on broadening your horizons as you continue your crochet journey. One of our favorites is the Clover Amour Crochet Hook Set because they’re so ergonomic and affordable to boot!
